3 Things to Know: Why Intercoms Matter During COVID-19

During COVID-19, when social distancing is essential, an intercom system solves on-site communication problems without having to shout through glass or a closed room.

The recent COVID-19 outbreak changed everything, from how we carry out day-to-day activities to how we work. Social distancing became clearly evident in every activity, and online meetings let people meet from anywhere. But what about communicating with someone on-site? Some places installed various barriers between staff and visitors, only to run into a new problem with sound, because the two parties could no longer hear each other and had to raise their voices or shout even more. So today we would like to introduce a system that solves this sound problem, namely the intercom system. Let's take a look at why it is well suited to a time like the COVID-19 pandemic.

First, let's get to know what an intercom is

An intercom is a communication system between people outside and inside a room, installed at a single point (mounted on the inside and outside of the room through the room wall or a counter glass partition) so that both parties can talk back and forth. In other words, the unit can act as both a microphone and a speaker in one. A single set consists of a Side A unit (staff) and a Side B unit (visitor). In the past the system worked in a simple way: the visitor had to press the transmit button on the Side B unit and the staff member pressed the answer button on the Side A receiving unit in order to talk. Today, however, the technology has been developed to be more modern and easier to use. For example, whereas visitors previously had to press a transmit button before speaking, they can now simply speak straight away without pressing anything.

So what makes an intercom so good, especially during a time like COVID-19?

An intercom reduces the risk of close contact between people during a conversation, because the listener and the speaker do not have to shout through the glass partition or a closed room. By simply speaking through the intercom, both parties can talk and hear each other.

Crime rates rose during the recent pandemic, so safety became all the more important. This system helps keep strangers or criminals from reaching the staff on duty, because the staff remain in a closed room and use only the intercom to communicate.

It also gives the organization a more modern image and reassures visitors who come to use the service that the organization has taken its protective measures one step further.
