What Is an Air Purifier, and Why Do You Need One?

Amid pollution and the Covid-19 outbreak, the air purifier has become an important aid. Let's get to know what it is and how it works.

As development has spread into various areas, the number of dwellings, industrial factories and fuel-powered vehicles has increased. These are also sources of pollution and contamination, and on top of that there is now the problem of the Covid-19 virus outbreak, which can be transmitted through the respiratory system. To bring good air back again, we need an aid to solve these problems — which inevitably comes down to the "air purifier." So today we will introduce everyone to what an air purifier is and how it works. We'll provide the answers.

What is an air purifier?

An air purifier is an electrical appliance that helps clean the air to make it purer by capturing foreign particles in the air, such as dust, bacteria and viruses, as well as unpleasant odors. An air purifier works by drawing air into the unit through a filter to capture foreign particles, then releasing clean air in return. Each brand of air purifier uses different filtering or air-purifying technology.

Why do you need an air purifier?

Today, air pollution is increasing and also comes in the form of tiny particulate matter called PM 2.5. The reason it is called PM 2.5 is that the diameter of the particles is as small as 2.5 microns. For an easy comparison, our hair is only about 50–100 microns, but these particles are as small as 2.5 microns, which is very small compared with our hair. And if inhaled in large amounts, they can harm the human respiratory system.

Another problem that has arisen is the spread of the Covid virus, which can be transmitted through the respiratory system by inhaling droplets contaminated with the virus. A study by the University of Castilla-La Mancha in Spain found that an air purifier using a HEPA filter capable of filtering 0.1-micron particles at 99.95%, placed in the middle of a room with a capacity of no more than 82 cubic meters in which a Covid patient was present, could reduce the chance of the virus circulating in that room's air by 80%.

For this reason, an air purifier is truly essential for us if we live in an area with high air pollution and a high number of Covid virus infections.
