Beryllium copper (CuBe) is an alloy with copper as its main component and beryllium (Be) as the principal alloying element (typically 0.5% - 3.0%). Adding this tiny amount of beryllium is what creates the "magic," transforming soft copper into a remarkably high-strength material.

Know the Main Grades Before Contacting a Beryllium Copper Supplier

The widely used grades fall into two main families. The high-strength alloy C17200, or Alloy 25 (CuBe2), contains about 1.8-2.0% beryllium and emphasizes maximum strength and wear resistance, often used for springs, connectors, and non-sparking tools. The high-conductivity alloy C17510, or Alloy 3 (CuNiBe), contains less beryllium (about 0.2-0.7%) with added cobalt or nickel, emphasizing maximum electrical and thermal conductivity while still maintaining good strength.

Electronics industry: the tiny springs in the connectors of smartphones, computers, or communication systems use grade C17200 to maintain contact pressure throughout their service life. Oil and gas industry: non-sparking safety tools are made from beryllium copper. Mold industry: grade C17510 is often used for mold components that require rapid heat dissipation.

A trustworthy supplier must issue a traceable chemical composition certificate (mill certificate or COA) that complies with RoHS requirements; be able to provide technical consultation and recommend the appropriate grade; offer value-added services such as slitting to size or laser/waterjet cutting; and, most importantly, understand the safety of handling beryllium dust — since dust or fumes from machining are severely toxic and cause chronic beryllium disease (CBD) — and be able to provide a Safety Data Sheet (SDS).
