For the system to function fully, it must have core devices working in harmony: the paging microphone, which often has zone-selection buttons; the mixer amplifier, which is the heart and brain of the system; and a wide variety of speakers, including ceiling speakers, cabinet speakers, column speakers, and horn speakers, each chosen to suit its particular area.

Zoning means grouping speakers by area, which makes it possible to page staff in a specific department without disturbing others, play different styles of music in different areas, and make targeted alert announcements to precise locations.

Its advantages include high flexibility, making it very easy to add or relocate paging points and speakers, savings on cabling, and centralized control from anywhere on the network.
